Understanding Sepsis: A Growing Concern and What We Can Do About It

Posted by Dr. Sharandeep Takhar MD, MBA on Sep 13th 2024

September is Sepsis Awareness Month, a time to highlight this critical illness that is increasingly prevalent in our hospitals.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis often starts with an infection, typically caused by bacteria or a virus, which can lead to organ dysfunction and, in severe cases, organ failure. Monitoring a patient's vital signs—such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature, and respiration rate—is crucial, as these indicators can become abnormal in septic patients.

In severe cases, sepsis can lead to complications such as bloodwork abnormalities like lower platelets, higher glucose levels, or kidney and liver damage, often requiring intensive care. The mortality rate for sepsis remains high, making it a significant concern in our healthcare system.
