Breast Cancer Education: Comprehensive Training Tools for Healthcare Professionals
Posted by Dr. Sharandeep Takhar MD, MBA on Oct 1st 2024
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women and is the second most common cancer affecting women in the U.S. Each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages reflection on the impact of this disease and emphasizes the importance of prevention and early detection.
Breast Cancer Screening
According to the updated 2024 guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPTF), women at average risk for breast cancer should begin mammogram screenings at age 40, continuing every two years until age 74, or as advised by their healthcare provider.
For women at higher risk—such as those with a personal or family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations like BRCA—it is important to consult with a medical professional to determine the right time to begin screening, the recommended frequency, and the most appropriate methods.
Special Considerations
Women who have undergone breast augmentation are generally considered to be at average risk and should follow the USPTF screening guidelines unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider.
Men who carry the BRCA gene or experience changes in their breast tissue should seek medical evaluation. In some cases, mammography may be recommended.
Breast Self-Exams
While self-breast exams do not replace mammograms or other diagnostic tests, they can help women identify any changes in their breast appearance, such as lumps, unusual discharge, or other abnormalities. Your doctor can provide guidance on how to perform a self-exam, and Mount Sinai’s health library offers additional information and a helpful instructional video.
